Whether you are applying for a job, submitting an expense claim or sending a signed contract with its appendices, one tidy PDF is far easier for the recipient than a pile of separate attachments. Many upload forms only accept a single file anyway.

This guide shows the quickest way to combine PDF files on any device, plus a few tips for getting the page order and file size right.

The quick way: merge PDFs in your browser

You don’t need Adobe Acrobat or any paid software. Our free Merge PDF tool works in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone:

  1. Open the tool and drag your PDF files onto the upload box, or click it to choose files.
  2. Check the order. Each file shows its page count. Use the arrow buttons to move files up or down.
  3. Name the result, for example application-jane-doe.pdf.
  4. Click “Merge PDF”. The combined document downloads immediately.

Unlike many online PDF services, the merging happens on your own device, so your documents are never uploaded. That makes it suitable for confidential files such as contracts, bank statements and medical records.

Combining PDFs with photos or scans

Often some of the pages you need are photos rather than PDFs: a picture of a receipt, a scanned ID card or a signed page photographed with your phone. Convert these first:

  1. Open JPG to PDF and add your photos.
  2. Choose A4 or Letter page size and keep orientation on Automatic.
  3. Click Convert to PDF.
  4. Add the new PDF to Merge PDF together with your other documents.

Built-in options on your computer

Mac (Preview)

Open the first PDF in Preview, choose View → Thumbnails, then drag other PDF files into the thumbnail sidebar where you want them. Use File → Export as PDF to save the combined file.

Windows

Windows doesn’t include a built-in PDF merger. You can use a browser-based tool like ours, or a desktop PDF editor if you already own one.

iPhone and iPad

In the Files app, select several PDFs, tap the More (…) button and choose Create PDF. For more control over the order, use a browser-based merger.

Tips for a professional result

  • Number your files before adding them, such as 01-cover-letter.pdf, 02-cv.pdf, 03-certificates.pdf. They will appear in the right order straight away.
  • Put the most important document first. Reviewers often only skim the opening pages.
  • Watch the file size. Many email providers cap attachments at around 20–25 MB, and upload portals can be much stricter. Large scanned pages are the usual culprit, so scan at 150–200 DPI rather than 600 DPI.
  • Remove passwords first. Password-protected PDFs can’t be merged until the owner removes the protection.
  • Open the final file and scroll through every page before sending it.

Frequently asked questions

Does merging PDFs reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied into the new file without being re-compressed, so text remains selectable and images keep their resolution.

Is there a limit to how many files I can merge?

Our tool has no fixed limit. Very large documents are limited only by your device’s memory.

Can I merge only certain pages?

The current tool merges whole files. A page-picking tool is on our roadmap; until then, you can split out the pages you need first and then merge them.
