GST and VAT in brief

GST (Goods and Services Tax) and VAT (Value Added Tax) are consumption taxes charged as a percentage of the price of goods and services. Businesses collect the tax from customers and pass it on to the government, usually after deducting the tax they paid on their own purchases. The names differ by country: India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Singapore use “GST”, while the UK, the EU and the Gulf states use “VAT”. The arithmetic is the same.

How to add GST or VAT

Tax = Net price × Rate ÷ 100  ·  Total = Net price + Tax

Example: a product priced at 1,000 before 18% GST: tax = 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = 180, so the total is 1,180.

How to remove GST or VAT from a total

A common mistake is to subtract 18% from a tax-inclusive price. That gives the wrong answer because the tax was calculated on the net price, not the total. The correct formula is:

Net price = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)  ·  Tax = Total − Net price

Example: a total of 1,180 including 18% GST: net = 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = 1,000, so the tax is 180. Subtracting 18% of 1,180 would wrongly give a tax of 212.40.

India: GST rates and CGST/SGST

Since 22 September 2025 (“GST 2.0”), most goods and services in India fall into two main slabs, 5% and 18%, with a special rate of 40% for a small group of luxury and “sin” goods. Some items are exempt (0%), and special rates such as 3% apply to gold and jewellery. Always check the current rate for your specific product or service code (HSN/SAC) on the official GST portal or with your tax advisor.

  • Intra-state sale (seller and buyer in the same state): the tax is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state). 18% GST becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
  • Inter-state sale (different states): the full rate is charged as IGST. Untick the CGST/SGST option to see the single figure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on a price?
Multiply the price by the GST rate and divide by 100 to get the tax, then add it to the price. 18% GST on 1,000 is 180, so the total is 1,180.
How do I remove GST from a GST-inclusive amount?
Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For 18% GST, divide by 1.18. The difference between the total and the result is the GST amount.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
For sales within one Indian state, GST is split equally into Central GST and State GST. For sales between states, the whole amount is charged as Integrated GST (IGST).
Can I use this as a VAT calculator?
Yes. Enter your country’s VAT rate, for example 20% in the UK, and untick the CGST/SGST split.
Are the preset rates up to date?
The presets reflect common rates as of 2026, including India’s 5%, 18% and 40% GST slabs. Tax rules change, so verify the rate for your product with official sources.
