Why are PDF pages sideways?
Pages end up in the wrong orientation for many reasons. Scanners and phone scanning apps sometimes guess the orientation wrongly. Documents that mix portrait text with landscape tables or charts often show the landscape pages sideways. And when a stack of paper is scanned double-sided, every second page can come out upside down.
Most PDF viewers let you rotate the view, but that change is not saved: the next person who opens the file sees the same problem. This tool changes the orientation inside the file itself.
How rotation works in a PDF
Every page in a PDF has a rotation setting of 0°, 90°, 180° or 270°. Viewers read this setting and display the page accordingly. Rotating a page simply updates that setting by the angle you choose; the content of the page is not re-drawn or re-compressed. That is why rotation is instant and never reduces quality. If a page already has a rotation, the new angle is added to it.
Choosing which pages to rotate
| Option | Best for |
|---|---|
| All pages | A whole document scanned the wrong way round |
| Odd pages / Even pages | Double-sided scans where alternate pages are upside down (use 180°) |
| Specific pages | Landscape tables, charts or single pages scanned sideways, for example 4, 9-11 |
Tips
- Not sure which way to turn a page? Text that reads from bottom to top needs 90° clockwise; text that reads from top to bottom needs 90° counter-clockwise.
- After rotating, you can use Split PDF to extract pages or Merge PDF to combine the corrected file with others.
- Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked by their owner before they can be rotated.
