Hide personal information before you share
Screenshots and photos often contain more than you mean to share: email addresses, phone numbers, account numbers, addresses, faces of bystanders, children’s names or car number plates. Blurring or covering these details before posting online or sending a bug report protects you and others.
Blur, pixelate or black box?
| Effect | Looks | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Blur | Soft and natural | Faces and backgrounds in photos |
| Pixelate | Mosaic blocks | Clearly marking hidden areas in screenshots |
| Black box | Solid redaction | Passwords, card numbers, ID numbers and anything truly sensitive |
Is a blur always safe?
Not always. A light blur or small pixelation of short text, such as a few digits, can sometimes be reversed by guessing and comparing. For truly sensitive information like passwords, bank or ID numbers, use the black box, or a high strength setting. The black box removes the information completely from the downloaded image.
Tips
- Select a slightly larger area than the text, so no edges of letters remain visible.
- Check the whole image, including reflections, monitors in the background and browser tabs.
- Downloaded images don’t keep the original pixels underneath, so the hidden content can’t be “unblurred” by removing a layer.
- Need to cut away part of the picture instead? Use Crop Image. To reduce the file size afterwards, try the Image Compressor.
