JPG vs PNG: what’s the difference?
JPG (also written JPEG) is the most common format for photos. It uses lossy compression: when a JPG is saved, fine detail is simplified to make the file small. That is perfect for photographs, but it can create blurry edges and blocky “artifacts” around text and sharp lines, and every new save loses a little more quality.
PNG uses lossless compression. Every pixel is stored exactly, no matter how many times the file is saved. PNG also supports transparency, which JPG does not. The trade-off is size: a photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo as JPG.
When should you convert JPG to PNG?
- Before editing. If you plan to edit an image several times, converting to PNG first prevents quality from degrading with each save.
- When a website or app requires PNG, for example some icon, sticker or upload forms.
- For screenshots, diagrams and text that you want to keep crisp from this point on.
- As a first step towards transparency. Once your image is a PNG, you can remove the background in an image editor and save it with a transparent area.
Will converting improve the quality of my JPG?
No converter can restore detail that JPG compression has already removed. What converting to PNG does is freeze the image at its current quality: any further editing and saving will not make it worse. If the original JPG looks blocky, the PNG will look identical, just in a lossless container.
Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?
That is expected. Lossless storage keeps every pixel exactly, so photos with lots of color variation produce large PNG files, often 3–10 times the size of the JPG. If you need a small file for the web, keep the JPG, or use our WebP Converter, which produces smaller files than both formats. To make a JPG smaller, use the Image Compressor.
Does a JPG converted to PNG get a transparent background?
Not automatically. JPG files have no transparency information, so the white (or any colored) background in your photo stays as it is. Converting simply changes the file format. To make the background transparent you need a background-removal step after converting.
