What exchange rate does this converter use?

The converter uses mid-market rates: the midpoint between buying and selling prices on global currency markets, updated once a day. It’s the fairest reference rate and the one you see on financial news sites. Banks, card networks, money-transfer services and airport exchange desks usually add a margin, so the rate you actually get is often 1–5% worse, and sometimes more.

How to get a better rate

  • Compare the total cost, not just the fee: a “zero fee” service may hide its profit in a weaker exchange rate.
  • Pay in the local currency when a card terminal abroad offers to charge you in your home currency; that conversion (“dynamic currency conversion”) is usually expensive.
  • Avoid airport and hotel exchange counters, which typically have the widest margins.
  • Use cards with no foreign transaction fee for travel and online shopping.

Currency codes

Currencies are identified by three-letter ISO 4217 codes. The first two letters are usually the country code: INR Indian rupee, USD US dollar, EUR euro, GBP British pound, AED UAE dirham, JPY Japanese yen, CNY Chinese yuan and SAR Saudi riyal.

Important
