When to delete pages from a PDF

A PDF often contains pages you don’t want to share or keep: a blank page left by the scanner, a duplicated page, an internal cover sheet, advertising pages in a downloaded report, or pages with personal information that aren’t relevant to the recipient. Removing them makes the document shorter, clearer and smaller.

How to choose pages

You typePages removed
1The first page (for example a cover sheet)
2, 4, 6Pages 2, 4 and 6
10-15Pages 10 to 15
21-Page 21 to the last page

Not sure which pages to remove? Open the PDF in your viewer first and note the page numbers shown at the bottom of the viewer window, not the numbers printed on the pages, which may differ.

Delete pages or extract pages?

Both tools give you a shorter PDF. Deleting is quicker when you want to remove a few pages from a long document. When you want to keep only a few pages, it is easier to list the pages to keep with Split PDF’s “Extract pages” mode.

A note on sensitive information

Deleting a page removes it from the new document, which is the right way to stop it being shared. Simply covering text with a black box in an editor does not remove the text underneath. If you need to hide part of a page that must stay in the document, use a proper redaction feature in a dedicated PDF editor.

Need to fix the remaining pages too? Rotate PDF corrects sideways pages, and Merge PDF lets you add pages from other files.
