What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used by designers, developers and publishers to fill a layout before the real content is ready. It is based on a scrambled passage from De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the ends of good and evil”), written by the Roman philosopher Cicero in 45 BC. The text has been used in typesetting for centuries and became standard in desktop publishing software in the 1980s.
Because the words look like real language but don’t mean anything to most readers, people focus on the design, such as typography, spacing and layout, rather than on what the text says.
When to use placeholder text
- Website and app mockups, to see how headings, paragraphs and cards look with realistic amounts of text.
- Print layouts such as brochures, magazines and posters.

Tips for using Lorem Ipsum well
- Match the real length. If product descriptions will be about 40 words, generate about 40 words, not three paragraphs. Layouts designed around the wrong length often break when real content arrives.
- Use real content where it matters. Headlines, buttons and navigation labels shape the design. Write real ones as early as possible.
- Never publish it. Search the finished site for “lorem” before launch. Placeholder text on a live page looks unprofessional and offers no value to visitors or search engines.
- Consider accessibility testing. Screen readers will try to pronounce Latin filler. For usability tests, realistic text in your users’ language gives better feedback.
