What is Open Graph?
Open Graph is a set of meta tags, originally created by Facebook, that tells social networks and messaging apps what to show when someone shares a link: the title, description, image and site name. Without these tags, platforms guess, often picking a random image or the wrong text. Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, Telegram, iMessage and many others read Open Graph tags. X (formerly Twitter) uses its own twitter: tags but falls back to Open Graph.
Image best practices
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Size | 1200 × 630 pixels (1.91:1 ratio) |
| Minimum | 600 × 315 pixels for large previews |
| Format | JPG or PNG, under about 5 MB (smaller loads faster) |
| Safe area | Keep text and logos away from the edges; some apps crop to a square |
| URL | Use an absolute https:// address that is publicly accessible |
Common problems and fixes
- Old preview still showing: platforms cache previews. Use Facebook’s Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn’s Post Inspector to fetch the page again.
- No image appears: make sure the image URL is absolute, uses https and isn’t blocked by robots.txt or a login.
- Wrong title: check that only one set of og: tags exists on the page; SEO plugins sometimes add a second set.
Open Graph vs meta tags
The regular <title> and meta description are written for search results, while Open Graph text is written for social feeds, where a slightly more conversational or curiosity-driven headline often works better. You can use the same text for both, or tailor each. Generate your search tags with the Meta Tag Generator, and resize your share image with the Image Resizer or Crop Image tool.
