What is a URL slug?

The slug is the part of a web address that identifies a specific page in a readable way. In example.com/blog/best-cafes-in-paris, the slug is best-cafes-in-paris. A good slug tells both people and search engines what the page is about before they click.

Best practices for SEO-friendly slugs

  • Keep it short and descriptive. Three to five meaningful words are usually enough. Shorter URLs are easier to read, share and remember.
  • Use hyphens, not underscores. Google treats hyphens as word separators, so green-tea reads as two words.
  • Use lowercase. URLs can be case-sensitive on many servers, so mixed case can create duplicate or broken links.
  • Include the main keyword, naturally, without stuffing.
  • Avoid dates unless the content is truly time-bound. A slug without a year doesn’t look outdated next year.
  • Don’t change published slugs without a 301 redirect, or you will lose links and rankings.

Should I remove stop words?

Words like “a”, “the” and “of” add length without adding meaning, so removing them can make slugs shorter and cleaner. But don’t remove them when they change the meaning or make the slug unnatural. “how-to-cook-rice” reads better than “cook-rice”. That’s why this option is off by default.

Non-English URLs

Modern browsers and search engines support Unicode in URLs, so a Japanese or Arabic page can have a slug in its own script. It looks natural in the address bar, but appears percent-encoded (for example %E4%B8%AD) when copied or shared. For international sites, many teams prefer transliterated Latin slugs. Tick “Keep non-Latin letters” if you want native-script slugs.

Frequently asked questions

What is a slug in a URL?
It is the readable part of a URL that identifies a page, such as “best-cafes-in-paris” in example.com/blog/best-cafes-in-paris.
Hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Use hyphens. Search engines treat hyphens as spaces between words, while underscores can join words together.
How long should a URL slug be?
There is no strict limit, but short slugs of about 3–5 words, or under 60 characters, are easiest to read and share.
Can I convert many titles at once?
Yes. Put one title per line and every line is converted to its own slug.
How are accented letters handled?
They are converted to plain letters: é → e, ü → u, ß → ss, ø → o. Cyrillic and Greek are transliterated to Latin.
