How to calculate a tip
Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100. For a $86.40 bill and an 18% tip: 86.40 × 18 ÷ 100 = $15.55, making the total $101.95. Split between two people, each pays $50.98 (rounded to the cent).
Quick mental math: for 10%, move the decimal point one place left ($86.40 → $8.64). Double it for 20% ($17.28), or add half of it for 15% ($8.64 + $4.32 = $12.96).
Typical tipping customs
| Country | Restaurants | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 15–20%, often 18–20% today | Servers rely on tips; also customary for bartenders, taxis and delivery |
| Canada | 15–20% | Similar to the US |
| United Kingdom | 10–12.5% | Check whether a service charge is already added |
| India | About 10% | Many restaurants add a service charge; tipping is optional |
| Most of Europe | Round up or 5–10% | Service is usually included in the price |
| Japan | No tip | Tipping can be considered awkward |
Customs change over time and vary by city and type of service, so treat these as general guidance.
Should you tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides traditionally suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, since tax isn’t part of the service. In practice, many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter the tax amount and tick “Calculate tip on the amount before tax” to see the difference; on most bills it is small.
Splitting the bill fairly
Splitting evenly is fastest when everyone ordered similar things. If not, each person can calculate their own share with this tool using their part of the bill. When an even split doesn’t divide into whole cents, someone pays a cent more; the calculator shows when this happens. Need a quick percentage for something else?
