Two kinds of PDF passwords
A PDF can be protected in two different ways, and it helps to know which one you have:
| Type | What it does | Can it be removed here? |
|---|---|---|
| Open password (user password) | The PDF asks for a password before showing anything. | Yes, once you enter the correct password. |
| Permissions password (owner password) | The PDF opens normally, but printing, copying text or editing is blocked. | Yes, usually without any password. |
Many bank statements, payslips and e-tickets use an open password, often your date of birth, customer ID or part of your name, as described in the email they came with. Reports and e-books often use only permission restrictions.
Why remove a PDF password?
- Stop typing the password every time you open a statement or invoice you have already saved securely.
- Upload documents to portals that reject password-protected files, such as job, loan or visa applications.
- Print, copy text from, or annotate a PDF you own that blocks those actions.
- Merge, split or compress the file with other tools, which usually can’t process encrypted PDFs.
Is this tool a password cracker?
No. If a PDF needs a password to open, its contents are encrypted with a key derived from that password, so you must know the password to unlock it. This tool does not guess passwords. Permission restrictions are different: the content is readable by anyone who can open the file, and the restriction is only a flag that PDF readers are asked to respect. That is why those files can be unlocked without the permissions password.
Use it responsibly
Only unlock PDFs that you own or that you have permission to modify. Removing protection from someone else’s document may break copyright law or an agreement. Once unlocked, treat the file with the same care as the original: anyone who gets the copy can open it. If you need to share it securely again, add a new password with Protect PDF.
Supported encryption
The tool supports the standard PDF password security used by Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, banks and most PDF software: RC4 40-bit and 128-bit, AES-128 and AES-256 (including PDF 2.0). PDFs protected with digital certificates or enterprise DRM systems can’t be unlocked with a password and aren’t supported.
After unlocking, you can merge the file with other documents, split it, or delete pages.
