What is an XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file that lists the important pages of your website so search engines can find and crawl them efficiently. It’s especially helpful for new websites with few links, large sites with thousands of pages, and pages that aren’t well linked from your navigation. A sitemap doesn’t guarantee indexing, but it helps search engines discover your content faster.

What a sitemap looks like

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
  <url>
    <loc>https://www.example.com/about</loc>
    <lastmod>2026-10-28</lastmod>
  </url>
</urlset>

Which pages should be in your sitemap?

  • Include pages you want to appear in search: home page, categories, products, articles and key landing pages.
  • Leave out redirected URLs, error pages, pages with noindex, duplicates with tracking parameters, login and cart pages.
  • Use the same version of every URL that your canonical tags use (https, www or non-www, trailing slash or not).

lastmod, changefreq and priority

lastmod is the only optional field Google uses, and only when it’s accurate, so set it to the date the content really changed. Google ignores changefreq and priority, which is why this tool leaves them out by default; some other search engines and CMS plugins still read them.

Limits and large websites

A single sitemap may contain up to 50,000 URLs and be up to 50 MB uncompressed. Bigger sites need several sitemaps and a sitemap index file that lists them. This generator does that automatically.

Submitting your sitemap

  1. Upload sitemap.xml to the root of your website.
  2. Add a Sitemap: line to your robots.txt (our Robots.txt Generator does this).
  3. Submit the sitemap URL in Google Search Console (Indexing → Sitemaps) and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Most CMS platforms, including WordPress, Shopify and Wix, generate sitemaps automatically. This tool is ideal for static sites, custom-built sites and landing pages outside your CMS.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create an XML sitemap?
Paste your page URLs, one per line, choose the last-modified date and click “Download sitemap.xml”.
How many URLs can a sitemap have?
Up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB. Larger lists are split into several sitemaps with a sitemap index automatically.
Do I need changefreq and priority?
Google ignores both fields, so they’re optional. lastmod is used if it’s accurate.
Where should I upload my sitemap?
Usually to the root of your site, e.g. https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml, then submit it in Google Search Console.
Can I paste paths instead of full URLs?
Yes. Enter your domain in “Domain for paths” and lines like /about are turned into full URLs.
