Horizontal vs vertical flip
| Option | What it does | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal | Swaps left and right, like a mirror | Selfies, reversed text, product photos facing the wrong way |
| Vertical | Swaps top and bottom | Reflections in water, creative effects, images scanned upside down |
| Both | Mirrors in both directions | The same as rotating by 180° |
Why do selfies look backwards?
Most phone front cameras show you a mirrored preview, because that is how you are used to seeing yourself in a mirror. Some phones then save the photo un-mirrored, while others save it exactly as previewed. That is why writing on a T-shirt or a sign behind you can appear reversed. A horizontal flip fixes it in a second.
Flip or rotate?
Flipping creates a mirror image, so text becomes backwards. Rotating turns the image without mirroring it, so text stays readable. If a photo is simply sideways or upside down, you probably want Rotate Image instead. A vertical plus horizontal flip gives the same result as a 180° rotation.
Design tips
- Direction of gaze: in layouts, people in photos usually look better facing into the page, toward the text. Flip a portrait horizontally to change which way the person faces.
- Watch for text and logos: after a horizontal flip, any writing in the picture will be reversed. Check signs, clothing and badges before you publish.
- Symmetry effects: flip a copy of a photo and place it next to the original to create mirrored, kaleidoscope-style designs.
Need to adjust the size or framing after flipping? Use Crop Image or Image Resizer.
