Why are my photos sideways?
Cameras and phones usually store photos in one orientation and add a small piece of data, the EXIF orientation tag, that tells software how to turn the image when showing it. Some apps, websites and older programs ignore that tag, so the photo appears sideways or upside down. Rotating the image here bakes the correct orientation into the pixels, so it looks right everywhere.
Choosing the right rotation
| Problem | Use |
|---|---|
| The top of the photo is on the left | 90° right (clockwise) |
| The top of the photo is on the right | 90° left (counter-clockwise) |
| The photo is upside down | 180° |
| The horizon is slightly tilted | A small custom angle, such as -2° or 3° |
Straightening with a custom angle
When you rotate by an angle that is not a multiple of 90°, the image no longer fits a straight rectangle. Instead of cutting off the corners, this tool enlarges the canvas so the whole photo stays visible, and the new triangular areas in the corners are filled. Choose transparent corners for PNG or WebP, or a fill color such as white for documents. After straightening, you can remove the corners with Crop Image.
Rotate vs flip
Rotating turns the picture around its center and keeps text readable. Flipping mirrors it, so text appears backwards. For mirrored selfies, use Flip Image. For pages inside a PDF, use Rotate PDF instead.
Quality notes
- Rotations by 90°, 180° and 270° move pixels exactly, with no blurring. PNG output is completely lossless.
- Custom angles need to blend neighboring pixels, which softens the image very slightly. Rotate once by the final angle rather than in several small steps.
- JPG and WebP are saved at 92% quality, which is visually identical to the original for normal photos.
