PNG or JPG: which should you choose?
| PNG | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless: every pixel is kept | Lossy: small details are simplified |
| Best for | Text, slides, charts, diagrams, screenshots, logos | Scanned photos and image-heavy pages |
| Transparency | Supported | Not supported |
| File size | Larger for photos, small for simple pages | Smaller for photos |
For most documents, contracts, slides and reports, PNG gives a cleaner result. If your PDF is mostly photographs, the PDF to JPG converter produces much smaller files.
Choosing the right resolution
- 72 DPI: quick previews and thumbnails. An A4 page becomes about 595 × 842 pixels.
- 150 DPI: great for websites, slides and sharing. An A4 page becomes about 1240 × 1754 pixels.
- 300 DPI: print quality and zooming in on fine detail. An A4 page becomes about 2480 × 3508 pixels.
Higher resolutions take longer to render and create bigger files, especially with PNG. Very large pages are scaled down automatically so your browser doesn’t run out of memory.
About transparent backgrounds
PDF pages are usually drawn on an implied white sheet, but many pages, such as an exported logo, a signature or a diagram, don’t actually paint that white background. With “Transparent background” ticked, those empty areas stay transparent in the PNG, so you can place the image on any colored background. If a page contains a full white rectangle or a scanned image, it will still look white.

- Put a page from a report into a presentation, blog post or social media post.
- Share a single page of a contract or certificate as an image.
