MP4 vs WebM: which should I choose?
| Format | Best for | Plays on |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 (H.264 + AAC) | Sharing, phones, TVs, editing apps, WhatsApp, social media | Practically everything, including iPhone and Windows |
| WebM (VP8/VP9 + Opus) | Websites, Android, open-source workflows | All modern browsers, Android, VLC; limited on some older devices |
If you are not sure, choose MP4.
Which formats can I convert?
The converter uses your browser’s own video engine, so it can open any file your browser can play. In Chrome and Edge that includes MP4, WebM, most MOV files and many MKV files. Older formats such as AVI, WMV and FLV, and some HEVC (H.265) videos, may not open in every browser.
Which output formats are available depends on your browser too: Chrome and Edge can create both MP4 and WebM, Safari creates MP4 and Firefox creates WebM. The options you see are the ones your browser supports.
How it works
Your browser plays the video and records it into the new format on your device. There is no upload, which keeps private videos private and saves time on slow connections, but conversion runs in real time: a 5-minute video takes about 5 minutes. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
