Why extract audio from a video?
- Lectures and webinars: listen on the go without the video.
- Interviews and meetings: get an audio file for transcription or note-taking.
- Music and performances you recorded: keep the sound of a concert or rehearsal you filmed.
- Video editing: reuse a sound track or voice-over in another project.
Supported videos
The converter works with videos your browser can play. MP4 (H.264 with AAC audio) and WebM work in all modern browsers; MOV files from iPhones usually work in Safari and Chrome. If a file can’t be read, it most likely uses an unusual audio codec. Converting it with a desktop app first, or trying another browser, usually helps.
Choosing the right quality
| Content | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Music, concerts | MP3 320 kbps or 192 kbps, stereo |
| Lectures, podcasts, interviews | MP3 128 kbps, mono |
| Editing in another program | WAV |
The extracted audio can’t be better than the original sound track. Phone videos usually contain 128–256 kbps AAC audio, so 192 kbps MP3 keeps practically all of it.
Respect copyright
Only extract audio from videos you made or have the right to use. This tool works with video files on your device; it doesn’t download from streaming sites. After extracting, trim the audio with the Audio Cutter or combine clips with the Audio Joiner.
Large files
Because everything runs on your device, very large videos (over about 1 GB) may be slow or run out of memory, especially on phones. For long recordings, a computer with Chrome or Edge works best.
