How to make a ringtone
- Add the song and play it to find the part you like, usually the chorus.
- Select about 20–30 seconds. Ringtones made on iPhone with GarageBand are limited to 30 seconds; Android has no strict limit.
- Add a 1-second fade in and a 2-second fade out so it doesn’t start or stop abruptly.
- Save as MP3 at 192 kbps.
- Android: copy the MP3 to the phone’s Ringtones folder (or open it and choose “Set as ringtone”). iPhone: use GarageBand on the phone to import the file and export it as a ringtone.
Keep selection vs remove selection
| Mode | Result | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Keep selection | Only the highlighted part is saved | Ringtones, samples, a quote from an interview |
| Remove selection | The highlighted part is cut out and the rest is joined | Removing a mistake, a cough, an ad or a long silence |
Which format should I save as?
- MP3 192 kbps: excellent quality for music with a reasonable file size; plays everywhere.
- MP3 320 kbps: the highest MP3 quality, for music you care about.
- MP3 128 kbps: smaller files, fine for speech, podcasts and ringtones.
- WAV: uncompressed and lossless, best if you will edit the audio further. About 10 MB per minute.
Note that cutting an MP3 and saving it as MP3 again re-encodes it. At 192 kbps or higher, the difference is inaudible to most listeners.
Supported files
The cutter can open any audio format your browser can play, including MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC, OGG, Opus and FLAC, and it can extract the sound from many video files. To combine several clips, use the Audio Joiner; to change formats without cutting, use the Audio Converter.
