Making your own thumbnails
YouTube recommends custom thumbnails of 1280×720 pixels (16:9) under 2 MB. Use large, readable text, a close-up face showing emotion, and strong contrast so the image stands out at small sizes. Resize images to exactly 1280×720 with our Image Resizer and keep the file small with the Image Compressor.
Copyright
Thumbnails belong to the video’s creator. Downloading one for personal reference is common, but reusing it publicly, for example in your own video or on a website, may require the creator’s permission. When in doubt, link to the video and credit the channel.
